Middle School Physical Education

Students in middle school are have physical education as part of their standard schedule. Providing a developmentally-appropriate introduction to a number of athletic activities it features group sports and games, with a goal of instilling team-building skills and good sportsmanship. Brazilian capoeira and yoga increase flexibility and agility. National Fitness standards are tested once each semester. In rare cases, a middle school family may petition the Academic Dean to substitute “contract PE” for physical education classes.

High School Physical Education

Classes in health and nutrition (see Health course under Sciences) with a variety of individual and group sports are integrated with physical disciplines from around the world. Many of our students play team sports as part of our school program and/or as members of county and city recreational and competitive leagues. We are a member of the Central Coast section of the California Interscholastic Federation and participate as part of their Coastal Athletics League.

No formal physical education classes are offered for high school students. However, they must earn four one-semester units or a total of two years of unit to meet graduation requirements. They do this by enrolling in contract PE where they demonstrate their participation in supervised physical activity.

Contract PE students may use Santa Cruz league sports, fitness clubs, dance classes, karate, and other off-campus sports and physical disciplines to fulfill their PE requirement. Under the supervision of a qualified instructor, students must complete a minimum number of hours of the sport/activity each week for the duration of the semester.
